Hinzu kommen 58.000 vom Veranstalter gezählte Besucher und ein Team Germany, das mit vier erreichten Medaillen Platz 4 im Medaillenspiegel belegt. Nicht das Beste aber ein ordentliches Ergebnis.

Damit schließen wir redaktionell diesen Blog. Würde uns freuen, wenn der ein oder andere hier nützliche Informationen gefunden oder sich einfach nur die Zeit vertrieben hat. Für uns war das alles hier Neuland und es hat ne Menge Spaß gemacht – das müssen wir unbedingt mal wiederholen.

November 7^th saw the second day of tournament at the World Cyber Games 2008 Grand Final.

Once again the Olympic spirit was omnipresent, as even competitors who had been knocked out of the tournament made sure to support their team mates as best they could.

But not only a large amount of competitors could be seen in the hall, as a larger number of paying spectators were now also plainly visible throughout the day. The local heros from Team Germany did very well in the last two days. 32 have past the Qualifying, 12 of them as Group Winners. Team Korea won their first gold medal after the Red Stone final match. Comeonbaby team beat Japan’s HappysweetsB team and took the first place.

Crowds of spectators were in front of the main stage during the day, which can also be said for the orange beanbags in the centre of the hall. The lounging area turned out to be a meeting place for players and visitors alike.

- 500 journalists from around the world underline the massive international interest in the event.

 At last! Yesterday, on November 6th, 2008 the gameplay of the 2008 World Cyber Games Grand Final finally got underway. At last the anticipation gave way to the thrill of the game, and many of the 800 participating players had their first test of skills.

The Olympic spirit filled Koelnmesse, as even many of those players who were not actually “in action” at the time still remained in the hall to cheer their team mates and to check out the competition.

The players were also clearly delighted by the supporting programme in the hall, as many took the opportunity of trying out some of the many attractions that the WCG partners had on offer. When not playing in tournament, some players could, amongst others, be seen playing golf, climbing, skateboarding or racing cars. It goes without saying, that in the light of such fantastic entertainment, the setting, organization and general program of this year’s Grand Final was praised by players, officials and spectators alike.

The second most numerous participants of the day, after the players themselves, were in fact the journalists. It is estimated that some 500 from around the world were present, underlining the massive interest in the event across the globe!

Für heute erwarten wir eine Menge spannender Spiele am ersten Finaltag des World Cyber Games Grand Final in Köln. Die deutschen Teammitglieder haben sich in der Vorrunde von ihrer gewohnt starken Seite gezeigt und wir sind guter Dinge, dass sich der ein oder andere heute einen Platz im morgigen Finale erspielen kann. Für uns wird es mit dem Start ins Wochenende hoffentlich ein bisschen ruhiger – 30 Minuten Mittagspause, um in Ruhe etwas zu essen würden mir jaschon genügen.

After an exciting battle between Germany and Denmark in Counter-Strike, star commentator Paul “ReDeYe” Chaloner took a few minutes off to relax and to give us an interview.

Paul has been a videogame commentator since 2002 and turned professional in 2005. As the Company Director of QUADV, which is based in Aylesbury, UK, Paul travels the world to the biggest gaming events to cover the most exciting games, or covers smaller events directly from the UK. These can then, for example, be watched online per live-stream at www.quadv.com. But also earlier games or classic battles can be watched online thanks to a comprehensive database of past events.

He estimates that approximately 10 to 15,000 viewers were online to watch the first rounds of Counter-Strike, but the number should increase a fair bit by the final rounds. Top events will generally tend to attract up to 100,000 viewers online in Europe. However, this is a far cry from the literally millions of viewers that top events in Korea or China will attract. The fact that e-sports are considered official sports in Korea, for example, is naturally a great advantage for the gaming community in the Far East. “But we’re slowly catching on in Europe too”, says Paul, as can be seen by the positive response in Cologne.

eSport ist: Die Möglichkeit sich selbst / sein Land / seinen Clan national und international zu repräsentieren. In keinem anderen Sport kann ich heute mit einer beliebigen Disziplin beginnen und mir in kürzester Zeit einen Namen verschaffen.

Im Gegensatz zu anderen eSport-Turnieren sind die WCG: Das jährliche eSport-Highlight, wo ich nicht nur mich selbst, sondern sogar meine Nation vertrete, um olympisches Gold zu erkämpfen.

Mein WCG Grand Final-Highlight war: Singapur! Einfach nur Singapur!

Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass auf den World Cyber Games in Köln: eSport in Deutschland so repräsentiert, akzeptiert und bejublet wird.

Für die nächsten World Cyber Games 2009 in Chengdu wünsche ich mir: Natürlich eine erneute Teilnahme, bereits jetzt alles Gute für das Deutsche Team und viele Madaillen.
